There’s still time – but the Self-Assessment clock is ticking

With just 3 weeks to go until the 31st January Self-Assessment deadline, HMRC has released some interesting figures which tell us one thing very clearly: a lot of people leave it later than they intend to, and then get penalised – don’t let this happen to you!

At LWA, we’ve already prepared and submitted the majority of our clients’ returns, but we know there are still people who haven’t started, are missing information, or simply want reassurance that everything is done correctly. If that’s you, you’re not too late — but now is the time to act.

HMRC’s latest update on the Self-Assessment deadline

HMRC have released figures showing that more than 4,600 people filed their tax return on Christmas Day, and a further 37,435 submitted theirs between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. For some, festive filing now seems to be as much of a tradition as the King’s Speech (or finding ways to avoid the washing up).

However, for those that haven’t yet filed their returns, HMRC is actively encouraging you to get started now with Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, saying:

“Don’t leave it until the last minute. Filing now means you know exactly what you owe and have time to arrange payment.”

Filing early doesn’t just avoid penalties - it gives you options, as we explain below.

Filing your Self-Assessment tax return early does more than save a fine

Submitting your return before the rush means:

  • You know exactly what you owe
  • You have time to plan how you will pay
  • You can explore payment options if needed
  • Some people may be able to pay through their PAYE tax code.

HMRC also offers a number of digital tools, including:

  • The HMRC app for payments and reminders
  • Online guidance, webinars and YouTube support
  • Step-by-step Self-Assessment help via GOV.UK.

More than 97% of returns are now filed online, and the system is available all year round, but that doesn’t mean it’s always straightforward, especially if your circumstances aren’t simple.

What do I need to be able to complete my Self-Assessment tax return easily?

To complete your 2024/25 Self-Assessment return, you will need:

  • Details of all income, including employment, self-employment, pensions, dividends, rental and savings income
  • Records of allowable expenses and reliefs
  • Pension contribution and charitable donation details

If anything is missing, unclear, or simply doesn’t look right, that’s where we can step in and help.

You can spread the payments for your Self-Assessment tax bill

With the festive season behind us and household budgets still under pressure, many people are understandably concerned about paying their tax bill in one go.

HMRC’s Time to Pay service allows you to spread the cost through monthly instalments once your return has been filed.

Since 6th April 2025, almost 18,000 people have already set up payment plans.

Key points to be aware of:

  • You can apply online if you owe £30,000 or less (please note LWA cannot arrange this on your behalf)
  • Your tax return must be filed first
  • Payments are based on your circumstances
  • Interest is still charged, so earlier payment is always better.

If you’re worried about how January’s bill will look, getting advice now gives you time to make sensible decisions, rather than being forced into last-minute choices.

High-Income Child Benefit Charge and Self-Assessment changes

If you only complete a tax return because of the High-Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC), there is now another option.

HMRC has launched a new PAYE digital service, allowing eligible customers to de-register from Self-Assessment and have the HICBC collected through their tax code instead.

If you have already submitted a return this year, you can opt out from the next tax year, with HMRC amending your tax code accordingly.

This is a welcome change for many families, but it’s important to check whether it applies to you before making any changes.

Read our blog here detailing all you need to know about Self-Assessment and the High-Income Child Benefit Charge update.

A few important technical points for this year’s Self-Assessment tax returns

There are also some less well-known updates that could affect your return:

Capital Gains Tax

CGT rates changed for disposals made on or after 30 October 2024.

The Self Assessment system will not automatically apply the new rates for 2024/25, so an adjustment may be required using HMRC’s calculator.

Winter fuel payments

You do not need to include Winter Fuel Payments or Pension Age Winter Heating Payments (Scotland) received in Autumn 2025 on this year’s return.

They will be dealt with in the 2025/26 tax year instead.

Making Tax Digital

From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with turnover above £50,000 will need to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, submitting quarterly updates to HMRC.

There is a testing programme available now, and both taxpayers and agents can sign up.

Stay alert to Self-Assessment payment scams

HMRC has issued a strong warning about rising scam activity ahead of the deadline. Since February 2025:

  • 4,800 Self Assessment scams have been reported
  • 135,500 scam reports have been received overall
  • 29,000 involved fake tax refund claims.

Scammers often use fake tax demands, refund offers or threats of legal action, however always remember that HMRC will never:

  • Leave voicemails threatening arrest
  • Ask for personal or financial details by text or email
  • Contact you to tell you about a refund.
